20 - The way out

Hope jumped for the door, grabbing Galen. Simultaneously, Mr Green leaped into the room. They collided midway, entangled with each other, and they both toppled to the floor. As they landed, her fist slammed into his nose, causing him to squeak in pain.

She heard footsteps coming quickly up the stairs. Galen pulled her to her feet. They left Mr Green curled in pain and took off down the hall, away from the main staircase and towards a wooden door with a green “EXIT” sign. They dived through the door into a fire stair.

“Up!” yelled Galen, who began bounding up the stairs.

She followed.

“Oi you! Stop!” came a loud voice from below.

“Fat chance!” she yelled back and disappeared around a bend in the stairwell.

They ran and ran, up two flights of stairs; three.

Hope was gasping, her muscles screaming. She was reconsidering her dislike of regular running practice.

The yells and pounding feet were right below them.

“Where,” Hope panted, “we going?”

“Roof?” he answered.

They slogged up a last flight, to be confronted with a solid, grey door.

…with the obligatory half a brick, chocking it open.

She spared a breath for a giggle, then burst through it. She kicked the brick away, and the door slammed shut.

“Won’t stop them long,” Galen panted. “Security has access to all doors.”

“Don’t need ’em to stop…” pant “…just slow ’em.” She ran with Galen to the edge of the roof. She looked down the front of the building. People were arriving and departing far below. She took aim and threw the keycard like a skipping stone, to land on top of a departing carriage.

Then she pulled Galen behind the top of the stairwell – a small, square structure, like a lift shaft, sticking out above the roof.

She heard the door slam open and several people run out. Activating her hideaway matrix, she pulled Galen in behind herself to cover them both.

She put a finger to Galen’s lips.

The guards’ footsteps went all over the roof.

“They got away!” Mr Green yelled.

“Yeah, I don’t see them. Must’ve climbed over the balconies. They’re sure not here anymore.” It was a deeper voice. Hope assumed a security guard.

“What did they take from you?” asked another.

“All I know is that drunken floozy took my access card, but they were in my office – they could’ve stolen anything from there!”

“Well, the tracker on your card’s departing rapidly. I’m afraid we can’t catch them on foot, but we’ll send a drone to follow, and we’ll be able to retrieve them as soon as they stop.”

“That’s not enough. Call the police! Send the sentinels after them!” he yelled.

“Ah, yeah, we’re not breaking out the sentinels for a petty theft. We’ll let the police know. But it would help if we knew what else might’ve been taken. Come back down with me. We’ll check your office for anything missing.”

The footsteps stopped at the stairwell door.

“Jonno?”

“Ya?”

“Can you set the drone in motion from here?”

“Sure thing, boss.”

The door opened and two sets of footsteps disappeared back down the stairs.
